Saudi Arabia Sets New Requirement for Workers Before Before Starting Jobs

Saudi Arabia Sets New Requirement for Workers Before Before Starting Jobs

Saudi Arabia is set to introduce mandatory occupational fitness assessments and health screenings for workers across different sectors. The new system will be implemented through a phased approach.

The Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development has issued a new guide outlining the requirements. The plan will eventually cover all professions and economic activities throughout the Kingdom.

According to the guidelines, the implementation will take place in three stages. The first phase will focus on new job applicants. Workers will need to complete medical assessments before starting employment.

Under the new rules, candidates cannot begin work until their examination results are reviewed and approved by an occupational medicine specialist. The approval will confirm whether they are fit for their assigned duties.

Later phases will expand the program to existing employees. The process will first target workers in high-risk workplaces. It will then gradually include all establishments across Saudi Arabia.

The regulations will apply to various sectors, including government organizations, non-profit institutions, and private companies. The coverage will include permanent employees, temporary workers, seasonal staff, trainees, remote workers, and people with disabilities.

The new framework aims to improve workplace safety and protect employee health. It will also help identify health risks related to specific professions and working conditions.

According to the guide, employees who do not meet occupational fitness standards will not be allowed to continue in their current roles. Employers will be required to take suitable action in such cases.

Companies may need to change an employeeโ€™s job role or assign them to different duties. However, workers will have the opportunity to complete additional medical examinations to prove their ability to perform their responsibilities.

The occupational fitness assessments will not only apply before employment begins. Additional screenings may also be required after workplace injuries or occupational illnesses.

The assessments could also be conducted when an employee changes their profession or moves to a different work environment. Some jobs may require regular health evaluations due to their nature and risk level.

The initiative reflects Saudi Arabiaโ€™s efforts to strengthen workplace standards and promote healthier working environments. Authorities are expected to gradually implement the system across all sectors as part of the wider labor reforms in the Kingdom.
