According to the city’s meteorological department, Shanghai saw its warmest May day in 100 years on Monday, breaking the previous record by one full degree.
According to scientists, global warming is worsening unfavorable weather, which has recently seen record-breaking temperatures in Southeast and South Asia and catastrophic heatwaves in numerous nations.

“At 13:09, the temperature at Xujiahui station hit 36.1 degrees Celsius (97 degrees Fahrenheit), breaking a 100-year-old record for the highest temperature in May,” read a post on the service’s official Weibo account. Later in the afternoon, the crowded station’s temperature increased even more, reaching 36.7C (98F), according to Shanghai’s meteorological agency.
According to the meteorological service, it put it a full degree above the previous record, 35.7C, which had been set four times before in 1876, 1903, 1915, and 2018.
The early-afternoon heat scorched Shanghai residents, and some applications predicted a “feels like” temperature of more exceeding 40C (104F). One post from Shanghai on Weibo stated, “I went out at noon to pick up a delivery, and after coming back, I got a headache.” Another person added, “I almost suffered from heatstroke; the temperature is explosive.”
