Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has died at the age of 76 in Dubai on Monday, September 21, 2026.
He was the younger brother of Dubai Ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Sheikh Mohammed is also UAE Vice President and Prime Minister.
The Dubai Ruler’s Court officially announced his death on Monday.
Following the announcement, the Court declared a 10-day official mourning period in Dubai.
Government flags will remain at half-mast throughout the mourning period. The measure took effect on Monday.
Sheikh Mohammed also paid tribute to his late brother. He prayed for mercy and comfort for his family and loved ones.
Who Was Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum?
Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum was a prominent member of Dubai’s ruling family.
He was the youngest son of the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum. He was also the youngest brother of Sheikh Mohammed.
Sheikh Ahmed graduated from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom.
He later served in Dubai’s military and security establishment.
His roles included Commander-in-Chief of the Central Military Command. He also served as Deputy Chairman of Dubai Police and Public Security.
Sheikh Ahmed was also closely associated with Al Wasl Sports Club and served as its chairman.
Major Role in UAE Horse Racing
Sheikh Ahmed had a significant presence in the UAE horse-racing industry.
Jebel Ali Racecourse was constructed in 1990 according to specifications developed by Sheikh Ahmed and trainer Dhruba Selvaratnam.
His involvement in racing also extended to racehorse ownership.
Official Emirates Racing Authority records show 614 wins from 4,475 career starts. His recorded career strike rate was 13.7 percent.
Several prominent racehorses competed in his colours during his long involvement with the sport.
Sheikh Ahmed’s Business Interests
Sheikh Ahmed also held important positions in Dubai’s business sector.
He served as Group Chairman of A.R.M. Holding, a Dubai-based private investment company.
His activities extended across several areas of Dubai’s economy alongside his sporting and public-service roles.
The death of Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum marks a period of mourning for Dubai’s ruling family.
