The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) announced on Monday that the Tarbela Dam Spillways were opened at 8:00 am. The move was taken to manage increasing water levels in the reservoir.
According to officials, the water release may cause flows of up to 250,000 cusecs. This could increase the risk of flooding in the Indus River and adjoining drainage channels.
The NDMA has advised residents of low-lying and nearby areas to remain alert. People have been asked to stay away from riverbanks and follow safety guidelines strictly. Citizens are also urged to cooperate with local administrations during precautionary measures.
Authorities have been directed to keep communities informed about any changes in the water situation. Continuous monitoring of the river system is also underway.
The decision to open the Tarbela Dam Spillways was made after the Flood Forecasting Division reported that the reservoir had reached its maximum conservation level of 1,550 feet. The release of excess water was necessary to maintain storage capacity and ensure the safety of the dam structure.
Experts believe that timely opening of the spillways is vital to balance water inflows and outflows. This step is also crucial for reducing the chances of unexpected flooding in nearby districts.
The NDMA stressed that public cooperation is key in preventing loss of life and property. Rescue and relief teams have been kept on standby to handle any emergency situation.
The Tarbela Dam Spillways play a central role in regulating Pakistanโs water resources. With heavy monsoon rains this season, officials are closely watching river flows to protect vulnerable communities.
