Boeing 727-223

On May 25, 2003, a Boeing 727-223 airliner, registered as N844AA, vanished from Quatro de Fevereiro Airport in Luanda, Angola. The aircraft’s disappearance led to a massive international search effort involving U.S. law enforcement and intelligence agencies, but the mystery only deepened as time passed.

The aircraft was seen taxiing on the runway without clearance or communication with air traffic control before taking off into the skies. At the time of its disappearance, the plane was being converted from a passenger jet to a cargo configuration, with one of its fuel tanks drained for maintenance.
