Trump Hints at US Withdrawal from NATO Amid Conflict

United States President Donald Trump has indicated he is considering withdrawing the U.S. from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), citing frustration with the alliance over its response to the ongoing conflict involving Iran.

In an interview with The Telegraph, Trump criticized NATO for failing to provide decisive support during the crisis. He suggested that the allianceโ€™s inaction had even led Russian President Vladimir Putin to perceive NATO as weak, raising questions about its operational effectiveness.

Trump specifically condemned NATO members for not assisting efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which he said remained blocked by Iran for weeks, disrupting global shipping and energy markets. He stressed that allied support in such scenarios should be automatic, rather than subject to negotiation, and expressed disappointment at the limited cooperation received.

The U.S. president also singled out British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, questioning the capabilities of the Royal Navy and criticizing its lack of meaningful participation in the conflict. He suggested that allied nations, particularly the U.K., had failed to meet expectations in regional operations.

Trumpโ€™s remarks underscore growing tension between the U.S. and its NATO partners as Washington faces pressure from the escalating Middle East conflict, while also signaling a potential reevaluation of U.S. commitments to traditional alliances.
