WASHINGTON β The Trump administration is pushing for Congressional approval of a $6.4 billion arms package for Israel. The deal includes advanced attack helicopters, troop carriers, and essential support equipment, according to sources familiar with the matter.
The development comes as Israel intensifies its military operations in Gaza City, targeting Hamas infrastructure. Displaced Palestinians say the bombardment has left them with no safe options to escape.
Details of the proposed arms deal
Under the plan, Israel would receive 30 AH-64 Apache attack helicopters in a contract worth $3.8 billion. Another $1.9 billion is allocated for 3,250 infantry assault vehicles to support ground operations.
Additionally, $750 million worth of spare parts for armored personnel carriers and power systems is moving through the approval process. Together, these agreements form one of the largest military support packages for Israel in recent years.
Timing ahead of global diplomacy
The timing of the arms sale is notable, as it comes days before the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The UN Security Council is also preparing for a high-level session on Gaza, where humanitarian concerns are mounting due to the ongoing strikes.
The Wall Street Journal was the first to report details of the planned helicopter and vehicle sales. The White House has yet to issue an official comment.
Political contrast in Washington
President Trump has consistently demonstrated firm support for Israelβs military operations. His stance contrasts sharply with the growing opposition among Democrats. A group of senators recently introduced a resolution calling for recognition of a Palestinian state.
In addition, more than half of Senate Democrats voted against recent arms sales to Israel, citing the heavy civilian toll in Gaza. This highlights the widening political divide in Washington over US foreign policy in the Middle East.
