Trump Slaps Tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China

Trump

US President Donald Trump has imposed sweeping tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico, and China, citing concerns over illegal immigration and drug trafficking.

The new tariffs, effective Tuesday, include a 25% duty on imports from Canada and Mexico and a 10% tariff on Chinese goods. Canadian energy products will face a reduced 10% levy. The White House defended the move, saying it was necessary to hold these nations accountable for their commitments to curb drug trafficking into the US.

Canada and Mexico swiftly condemned the decision and announced retaliatory measures. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau confirmed Ottawa would impose 25% tariffs on $155 billion worth of US goods, while Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum dismissed Trump’s accusations and prepared similar countermeasures. China also vowed to take “all necessary steps” to protect its economic interests.

Economists warn the tariffs could push up prices on essential goods, with industries such as auto manufacturing and agriculture particularly affected. Trade analysts suggest Trump may use the tariffs as leverage to secure concessions from Canada and Mexico on border security.

For now, tensions remain high, with businesses and consumers bracing for potential economic fallout.
