Turkiye Strikes $10 Billion Fighter Jet Deal With Indonesia

Turkiye has secured a landmark defence agreement with Indonesia to export 48 fifth-generation Kaan fighter jets, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced. The contract, valued at $10 billion, will be fulfilled over the next decade.

The jets, developed by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI), mark a significant achievement for Turkiye’s defence sector, which continues to expand its global footprint with advanced military technologies, including its renowned Bayraktar drones.

According to Turkish media, the agreement includes a technology transfer component that will involve Indonesian participation in the production process. “Indonesia’s local capabilities will also be utilised,” Erdogan stated, highlighting the collaborative nature of the deal.

Kaan, which took its maiden flight in February 2024, is currently powered by engines similar to those used in F-16s, though Turkiye plans to develop a fully indigenous engine in the future. The deal further cements Ankara’s growing status as a key player in global defence exports, which reached $7.1 billion this year.
