UEFA Faces Backlash Over Tribute to Palestinian Star Killed by Israel While Waiting for Aid

UEFA is facing widespread criticism after posting a tribute to Palestinian football legend Suleiman al-Obeid. The post failed to mention that he was killed by Israeli gunfire while waiting for aid.

On Saturday, UEFA shared a photo of the 41-year-old former forward on social media platform X. The message read, “Farewell to Suleiman al-Obeid, the ‘Palestinian Pelé’. A talent who gave hope to countless children, even in the darkest of times.”

Social media users quickly condemned UEFA for not revealing the cause of al-Obeid’s death. Many called for the organization to condemn Israel’s actions. Comments included, “No mention of how he died tho right?” and “You should condemn the actions of Israel.”

Some users accused UEFA of ignoring key facts and urged the group to provide full details. Others demanded UEFA ban Israel from all sports, accusing the organization of “legitimizing genocide through inaction.”

The Palestine Football Association confirmed that al-Obeid was killed by Israeli gunfire while waiting for aid with others. The 41-year-old was a former national team star who scored more than 100 goals during his career. He was known as the “Pelé of Palestine” and was beloved by many Palestinians.

Al-Obeid is survived by his wife and five children.

Arab media reported that since October 2023, Israeli strikes in Gaza have killed 662 athletes. Among them, 321 were connected to football, including players, coaches, referees, officials, and club members.

The incident has put UEFA under pressure to take a clear stance on the conflict and the deaths of athletes in the region.
