Britain has announced it will buy a dozen US-made F-35A fighter jets capable of carrying tactical nuclear weapons, marking its biggest nuclear deterrent expansion since the Cold War.
The move signals a return to air-based nuclear capability for the UK after more than two decades. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the jets will strengthen national security in an era of “radical uncertainty,” pointing to growing threats from Russia and reduced US military presence in Europe.

The F-35As, manufactured by Lockheed Martin, can carry U.S. B61 nuclear bombs, although the UK would still require the U.S. to supply the weapons. This purchase would allow Britain to provide dual-capable aircraft to NATO for nuclear missions, adding to its current Trident submarine deterrent.
NATO chief Mark Rutte welcomed the decision, calling it a strong British contribution. The plan also supports 20,000 jobs and aligns with the UK’s goal to increase defence spending to 5% of GDP by 2035.
