US Imposes Ban on Foreign Student Admissions at Harvard University

U.S. President Donald Trump has prohibited Harvard University from admitting international students, following an ongoing investigation into the university’s alleged inaction regarding antisemitic incidents on campus.

According to an American news outlet, Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem communicated the decision to Harvard through an official letter, stating that the ban is part of a broader federal probe into the university.

As a result, the Department of Homeland Security has revoked Harvard’s certification under the Student and Visitor Exchange Program, meaning the university can no longer enroll foreign students, and those currently enrolled must transfer to other institutions.

Harvard University has condemned the decision, labeling it “illegal” and warning that it would inflict significant damage not just on the institution but on the country as a whole.

This move follows earlier actions by the Trump administration, which had already frozen billions of dollars in funding to Harvard. In March, the government launched a review of $256 million in federal contracts and an additional $8.7 billion in grants, citing Harvard’s failure to properly address antisemitism.

Relations between the university and the administration have worsened over time, particularly after Harvard resisted governmental efforts to influence its academic and administrative operations—an approach that diverged from other institutions’ responses.
