US and NATO Reach Preliminary Greenland Agreement, Aiming for Arctic Cooperation

A preliminary agreement has been reached between the United States and NATO concerning Greenland. The deal is modeled on the UK’s Cyprus agreement, under which the US would receive limited authority and a share in Greenland’s mineral resources.

According to reports, US President Donald Trump and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte agreed on a framework covering Greenland and the wider Arctic region. The agreement would allow the United States to exercise control over specific areas of Greenland while gaining stakes in its strategic mineral deposits.

Under the proposed framework, Russia and China would be barred from interfering in Greenland. The United States would also deploy its advanced “Golden Dome” system on the island, enhancing security and surveillance capabilities.

President Trump stated that, if finalized, the agreement would benefit both the United States and NATO member states. He also confirmed that his earlier threat to impose tariffs on European countries would be withdrawn, ensuring no new NATO tariffs would take effect next month.

The deal would grant the US the ability to conduct military exercises, intelligence missions, and training operations in Greenland without prior permission from Denmark. This represents a major step in expanding NATO’s strategic influence in the Arctic region.

Previously, President Trump had suggested purchasing Greenland, though he later clarified that the US’s interest lies primarily in security and mineral resources. He also mentioned plans to construct an impressive “golden dome” in Greenland as part of future developments.

Russian President Vladimir Putin commented on the agreement, stating that Greenland’s ownership is a matter to be resolved between the United States and Denmark. He confirmed that Russia has no objections to the preliminary deal.

This agreement signals Greenland’s growing importance in global security and resource planning. Analysts say it strengthens NATO’s Arctic presence and gives the United States strategic advantages in the region. Greenland will likely play a key role in future geopolitical and economic developments in the Arctic.
