EU’s Kallas Says US Wants to ‘Divide Europe’ Amid Tensions

EU’s Kallas Says US Wants to 'Divide Europe' Amid Tensions

BRUSSELS – European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said the United States wants to “divide Europe” and does not fully support the European Union.

In an interview with the Financial Times on Friday, Kallas highlighted growing tensions between the US and EU after more than a year of strained transatlantic relations.

“What I think is actually important for everybody to understand is that the US has been very clear that they want to divide Europe. They don’t like the European Union,” Kallas told the FT.

US President Donald Trump has frequently criticized the EU during his second term, imposing tariffs on member countries and others. Trump also raised the idea of annexing Greenland, a move seen as potentially threatening NATO’s unity.

This week, the US launched trade investigations into the EU and other countries, including China, India, Japan, South Korea, and Mexico. The investigations target what the US calls unfair trade practices and could result in new tariffs by summer. This comes after the US Supreme Court struck down parts of Trump’s earlier tariff program.

Kallas said the US approach mirrors tactics used by adversaries of the EU. She emphasized that European countries should negotiate collectively with the US rather than individually. “We are equal powers when we are together,” she said.

On defence, Kallas acknowledged that Europe relies on American technology and military assets but stressed the need for the EU to invest in its own defence industry. “We need to buy from America because we don’t have the assets or capabilities we need,” she said.

Kallas’ remarks underline growing concern in Europe over US policies and the importance of unity among EU member states. Analysts say her comments may influence upcoming discussions on trade, defence, and the future of transatlantic cooperation.
