NEW YORK: Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old Democratic Socialist and Muslim politician, has made history by winning the New York City mayoral election. With this victory, Zohran Mamdani becomes the first Muslim and the youngest person ever to hold the cityβs top office.
According to official results, Mamdani secured 49.6 percent of the vote, defeating former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who received 41.6 percent. Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa finished third but gained enough votes to influence the outcome. Analysts say his support may have indirectly helped Zohran Mamdani secure the win.
Mamdaniβs victory was confirmed late Tuesday night by the election headquarters. His campaign focused on key progressive issues such as freezing rents, establishing city-run grocery stores, and offering free public bus transportation. These promises resonated strongly with working-class voters and the cityβs younger population.
Former Governor Cuomo, once considered a strong contender with major Democratic support, faced challenges throughout his campaign. His reputation suffered due to allegations of sexual harassment and controversies surrounding nursing home deaths during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The 2025 mayoral election witnessed record voter participation, with more than two million New Yorkers casting ballots β the highest turnout in over five decades.
Zohran Mamdani, known for his vocal stance on global justice, has also drawn attention for his criticism of Israelβs actions in Gaza. He stated that if Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, wanted by the International Criminal Court, visited New York, he would push for his arrest.
Earlier, former U.S. President Donald Trump warned that if Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist, won the race against Cuomo and Sliwa, federal funding to New York City could be at risk.
