The Cane Commissioner Punjab has issued formal notices to 10 sugar mills for failing to begin the sugarcane crushing season by the official deadline of November 15. The action comes after authorities observed delays across several units despite clear government instructions.
According to officials, the management teams of the 10 sugar mills have been summoned to the Cane Commissionerโs office on November 26. They will be required to explain the reasons behind the delay. Sources within the department said that a fine of Rs one million per day may be imposed if the mills fail to provide a satisfactory justification.
The government of Punjab had earlier announced that the sugarcane crushing season for 2025 would begin uniformly on November 15. The decision was designed to ensure a smooth and timely start to sugar production across the province. A unified schedule also helps manage market supply, prevent regional imbalances, and protect farmers from unnecessary delays.
Officials stressed that the late start by the 10 sugar mills could negatively affect growers, who depend on timely crushing to secure their payments. Any delay can also impact the quality of sugarcane and disrupt the overall supply chain.
The government has reminded mill owners that strict compliance with procurement rules is required. All mills were instructed to begin crushing operations immediately on the notified date. The guidelines were issued to safeguard farmers from potential financial losses caused by prolonged waiting periods.
A uniform crushing schedule also supports stable sugar availability in markets and helps maintain price balance. Delays in crushing not only create uncertainty for farmers but also contribute to production issues later in the season.
Authorities said further action would be taken once the summoned managements present their explanations. The notices issued to 10 sugar mills underline the governmentโs intent to enforce regulations and ensure fair treatment for farmers across Punjab.
