Flying Officer Marium Mukhtiar is being remembered as a trailblazing daughter of Pakistan who made history as the first female fighter pilot to sacrifice her life in service of the nation. Her bravery and dedication continue to inspire generations across the country.
Marium Mukhtiar was commissioned into the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) on April 27, 2013. She quickly gained recognition for her discipline, determination, and passion for aviation. She became part of the pioneering cadre of female fighter pilots trusted with operating frontline combat jets.
Tragically, her journey ended on November 24, 2015, during a routine training sortie near Mianwali. The F-7PG aircraft she was piloting suffered a critical technical malfunction mid-air. Demonstrating extraordinary courage, Marium Mukhtiar chose to prioritize civilian safety over her own life.
Instead of ejecting immediately, she steered the malfunctioning jet away from populated areas, ensuring no harm to people on the ground. Unfortunately, when she attempted to eject at the last moment, it was too late to survive. Her instructor, who was also on board, survived the crash.
For her bravery and selfless devotion, Marium Mukhtiar was posthumously awarded the Tamgha-e-Basalat, one of Pakistanโs highest military honors. November 24 is observed in her memory as a day to celebrate her heroism and sacrifice. Her legacy highlights the courage, dedication, and pioneering spirit of Pakistanโs armed forces.
