During a recent hearing, Justice Hasan Azhar Rizvi emphasized the serious health risks linked to Gutka, a chewable product made from betel nut (supari). He noted that Gutka is even more harmful than cigarettes and is a leading cause of oral cancer. Hospitals across the country are seeing increasing numbers of patients suffering from related illnesses.
The petitionerโs lawyer, Shah Khawar, informed the court that he had not received instructions from his client regarding the appeal. Justice Rizvi responded that the court could summon the petitioner if necessary and even demonstrate the dangers of Gutka in the courtroom.
The courtโs remarks highlight the importance of enforcing the gutka ban and raise awareness about the public health hazards posed by the product. Authorities continue to stress the necessity of strict compliance with the ban to protect citizens from long-term health risks.
In a related development, a Station House Officer (SHO) at Shah Latif Police Station in Karachi was suspended for allegedly demanding a bribe from the gutka mafia. Additional Inspector General Karachi Javed Alam Odh took immediate action after an audio clip surfaced showing the SHO demanding Rs. 400,000 to release arrested suspects.
The incident occurred after a police raid on a gutka factory, which led to the arrest of several suspects, including Imran, Zeeshan, Osama, and Faisal. Reports indicate that the gutka mafia tried to contact the SHO to secure the release of their accomplices.
The suspension of the SHO underscores the authoritiesโ commitment to enforcing the gutka ban while cracking down on corruption linked to illegal production and distribution.
Officials urge the public to support the ban, highlighting that continued consumption of Gutka poses severe health risks. The courtโs reinforcement of the ban, combined with strict action against law enforcement misconduct, signals a stronger approach to tackling the gutka problem nationwide.
With both legal and administrative measures in place, the government aims to curb the spread of Gutka and protect public health. Observers say strict enforcement of the gutka ban is crucial for reducing oral cancer cases and promoting healthier communities.
