The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) has approved a rise in gas prices for consumers in various parts of Pakistan. Islamabad, Punjab, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will see a 4.89 percent increase, while Sindh and Balochistan face a 7.14 percent hike.
For Islamabad, Punjab, and KP, OGRA has allowed Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) to raise prices by Rs 86.30 per MMBtu. The new rate is Rs 1,852.80 per MMBtu, up from Rs 1,766.50 per MMBtu.
In Sindh and Balochistan, Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) has been permitted an increase of Rs 118.47 per MMBtu, bringing the price to Rs 1,777.02 per MMBtu from Rs 1,658.56 per MMBtu.
This adjustment comes despite earlier signals from OGRA indicating a potential average reduction in gas prices of around 8 percent. The regulator had noted that tariffs could decrease by up to 3 percent for Islamabad, Punjab, and KP consumers, and by 8 percent for Sindh and Balochistan, based on the financial requirements submitted by gas companies.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, speaking at a recent ceremony, highlighted that gas supply had been a major challenge during the PDM government in 2022. He said the current administration has worked to improve availability and supply.
The Prime Minister also announced that new connections of high-quality RLNG (Re-Gasified Liquefied Natural Gas) are now being issued to the public, marking a significant step toward improving domestic gas access.
Analysts say the OGRA-approved increase will impact household and industrial consumers but is aimed at ensuring financial stability for gas utilities while supporting ongoing supply improvements.
Officials urge consumers to stay informed about updated tariffs and usage guidelines to manage household energy costs effectively. The rise in gas prices comes amid broader efforts to modernize Pakistanโs energy infrastructure and expand RLNG availability.
