Festival of Lights Diwali Added To UNESCO Cultural Heritage List

The Festival of lights Diwali has been officially added to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list, the Indian government announced. The decision highlights the festival’s cultural and spiritual significance worldwide.

UNESCO’s cultural agency, meeting in New Delhi from Tuesday to Thursday, reviewed nominations from 78 countries. The inclusion of Diwali aims to “raise awareness of the diversity of these traditions” and ensure their protection for future generations.

Millions of people across India and the world celebrate the Festival of lights Diwali, also known as Deepavali. Observed by Hindus, Sikhs, and Jains, the five-day festival symbolizes the victory of good over evil and the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after defeating the demon king Ravana.

Celebrations take place on the new moon day in October or November, depending on the lunar calendar. People light lamps, decorate homes, and burst firecrackers. The festival is also strongly associated with worship of Goddess Lakshmi, who represents wealth and prosperity.

The Delhi government has organized several events to mark the occasion. Special illuminations will light up major buildings, roads will be decorated, and a large-scale lamp-lighting ceremony will be held to celebrate Diwali.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs called the announcement “a joyous moment” and highlighted the festival’s global cultural impact. “Deepavali, the festival of lights marking the triumph of good over evil and the return of Lord Rama to his kingdom Ayodhya, is celebrated globally and now joins UNESCO’s heritage list,” the ministry said on X.

Adding Diwali to UNESCO’s list helps preserve the traditions and rituals associated with the festival. The recognition also encourages cultural exchange and appreciation of India’s rich heritage around the world.

The Festival of lights Diwali continues to inspire communities globally, reflecting values of light, hope, and prosperity that transcend borders.
