IPL Brand Value Drops for Second Time in History – Here’s Why

IPL Brand Value Drops for Second Time in History – Here’s Why

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has seen its brand value fall sharply by 20% in 2025, reaching $9.6 billion, according to Brand Finance. This marks only the second significant decline in the league’s history.

Analysts say the drop is linked to the mid-season suspension of IPL 2025 and broader commercial challenges that affected broadcaster confidence and franchise valuations.

The biggest disruption came in May when the tournament was paused for nearly a week due to India–Pakistan border tensions. This was the first mid-tournament suspension since the COVID-19 interrupted season of 2020. The stoppage reduced advertising exposure, disrupted match-day visibility, and slowed commercial momentum for sponsors and broadcasters.

Structural Pressures Impact IPL Valuation

Several structural factors added to the decline. India’s ban on real-money gaming advertisements removed high-spending brands from the IPL ecosystem. The exit of cryptocurrency sponsors further reduced the sponsorship pool.

The league also faced scheduling clashes with PSL X, which complicated global broadcast arrangements. Ongoing uncertainty about the upcoming mega auction added more pressure for franchises.

Franchise Values Show Decline

Brand Finance notes that nine out of ten IPL franchises lost brand value in 2025.

  • Mumbai Indians dropped around 10% to $108 million
  • Royal Challengers Bangalore fell to $105 million
  • Chennai Super Kings declined 24% to $93 million
  • Kolkata Knight Riders fell 33% to $73 million
  • Sunrisers Hyderabad dropped 34% to $56 million
  • Rajasthan Royals saw the steepest fall at 35% to $53 million

Moderate losses were reported by Punjab Kings ($66 million), Lucknow Super Giants ($59 million), and Delhi Capitals ($59 million, down 26%).

In a rare positive outcome, Gujarat Titans grew by 2% to $70 million, thanks to strong fan engagement and consistent commercial planning.

Looking Ahead for IPL

Analysts believe IPL franchises must stabilize operations, secure reliable sponsorships, and maintain global broadcast confidence to regain lost value. With a new mega auction on the horizon, 2026 could be a turning point for the league.
