ISLAMABAD โ A special court has sentenced former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi to 17 years in prison each in the Toshakhana 2.0 Case. The verdict was announced by Judge Shahrukh Arjumand.
The court handed down 10 years for criminal breach of trust under Section 409 and an additional seven years under Section 5/2/47 of the Prevention of Corruption Act. Both sentences are linked to charges filed in December 2024.
The Toshakhana 2.0 Case revolves around allegations that Khan and Bushra Bibi purchased high-value Bulgari jewelry at a heavily discounted price. Authorities claim the couple retained gifted items while significantly undervaluing their actual worth.
Investigators focused on four main gifts: a diamond necklace, earrings, a ring, and a bracelet. Two of these items were estimated at 380,000 euros (approximately 71 million PKR) based on 2021 market rates. Reports suggest the accused paid only Rs2.9 million for items worth Rs5.8 million, including the bracelet and ring.
The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) conducted the investigation, examining how the former prime minister and his wife handled official gifts during his tenure. The case highlights scrutiny over public officialsโ transparency in declaring assets and gifts.
Legal experts say the Toshakhana 2.0 Case sets a precedent in Pakistanโs ongoing anti-corruption efforts. It emphasizes accountability and stricter monitoring of how government officials manage high-value gifts and property.
The verdict has sparked nationwide discussion, with supporters of the accused questioning the ruling while anti-corruption advocates welcome the decision as a step toward transparency. Analysts note that the case will likely influence future regulations on gift declarations by public officials.
