ISLAMABAD โ Instagram is making a major change for creators and users. The platform now limits hashtags to just five per post or reel.
Meta-owned Instagram confirmed the update as part of efforts to fight spam and improve content discovery. Users can no longer add dozens of hashtags to increase reach.
IG CEO Adam Mosseri explained the reasoning behind the change. Speaking on his advice channel, he said, โEven though it might be tempting to add more hashtags, a few well-chosen ones perform far better than a long list of generic tags. Focus on quality, not quantity.โ
Over the past year, Instagram experimented with hashtag restrictions. Some users were allowed only three hashtags during testing. Now, the five-hashtag limit is universal, affecting all users worldwide. This represents one of the most significant changes to content strategy on the platform in recent years.
Instagram says the new rule encourages creators to choose hashtags strategically. Generic tags like #reels or #explore are unlikely to bring meaningful engagement. Instead, the platform recommends using relevant, specific hashtags to reach the right audience.
Experts believe this update will change how influencers, brands, and everyday users approach content creation. Smart, targeted hashtag use is expected to become the norm. Many creators may need to rethink their posting strategies to maintain visibility and engagement on Instagram.
The change also reflects Instagramโs ongoing efforts to prioritize high-quality content. By limiting hashtags, the platform hopes to reward posts that are thoughtfully crafted and genuinely engaging, rather than those relying on spammy tag tactics.
