Pakistan Minister Shares Update on JF-17 Thunder Jet Sales Abrod

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan has confirmed ongoing international talks related to the export of its advanced fighter aircraft. These discussions focus on the sale of the JF-17 Thunder, a multi-role combat jet developed with China.

The confirmation came from Minister for Defence Production Rana Tanveer Hussain. He spoke during an interview with international media. The minister said several countries have shown strong interest in the aircraft. Talks are currently at different stages with multiple potential buyers.

Rana Tanveer Hussain explained that any export deal will require China’s approval. China is a joint development partner in the program. Both countries coordinate closely on production and sales decisions.

The JF-17 Thunder gained global attention after May 2025 events. During that period, Pakistan reported shooting down several Indian fighter jets. Following these developments, international interest in the aircraft increased.

The Block III version is the most advanced model of the jet. It features an Active Electronically Scanned Array radar. The aircraft also carries long-range beyond-visual-range air-to-air missiles. These features improve detection, tracking, and combat capability.

Military experts classify the aircraft as a 4.5-generation fighter jet. This places it close to some of the most advanced fighters in service today. It can perform air defense, strike missions, and reconnaissance tasks.

Cost remains one of its strongest advantages. The minister stated that similar fighter jets often cost between $250 million and $350 million. In comparison, the JF-17 Thunder is priced between $40 million and $50 million. This makes it attractive for countries with limited defense budgets.

Lower cost does not mean limited capability. Officials say the aircraft offers strong performance for its price range. It also allows easier maintenance and training.

Analysts believe export deals could strengthen Pakistan’s defense industry. Such sales may also enhance the air power of buyer nations. At the same time, the aircraft could create new challenges for regional rivals.
