‘Are You Dead’ Hits #1 Paid App in China Amid Loneliness Surge

A uniquely named app, “Are You Dead,” has surged in popularity across China, reflecting the growing loneliness crisis among young adults living alone. The app recently became the #1 paid download on Chinese app stores, priced at just 8 yuan (around $1.15).

Launched quietly in May by start-up Moonscape Technologies, the app went viral in recent weeks. Its purpose is simple but striking: users must press a large button every one or two days to confirm they are alive. If a check-in is missed, “Are You Dead” alerts a nominated emergency contact, warning that the user may be in trouble.

The app’s popularity highlights a wider social trend in China. According to Statista, in 2018 there were roughly 200 million single adults, with over a third living alone. The average household size has also shrunk, from nearly four people in 1990 to around 2.8 per household in 2023. Experts predict that by 2030, China could have 200 million one-person households due to urbanisation, delayed marriage, and an ageing population.

Despite its success, “Are You Dead” has faced criticism for its blunt and unsettling name. Developers responded, stating they are considering a name change and already market the app internationally as Demumu, a softer alternative.

The app’s viral rise underscores the challenges of modern urban life in China, particularly among the younger population who face isolation and mental health risks. Experts suggest that digital tools like “Are You Dead” can provide reassurance and safety checks, while also sparking conversations about social connectedness and support systems in increasingly solo households.
