The Sindh government has approved a new grading structure for matriculation and intermediate examinations, replacing the traditional marks-based system.
Provincial Minister for Universities and Education Boards Muhammad Ismail Rahu said the decision aligns with federal policy under the Inter Boards Coordination Commission (IBCC). The goal is to ensure uniformity across educational boards nationwide.
Under the new grading structure, students will be assessed through grades instead of numerical marks, following international standards. The system will be implemented in phases across Sindh.
The grading system will begin in 2026 for class 9 and class 11 annual examinations, and in 2027 for class 10 and class 12 examinations, Rahu explained.
The minister detailed the grading criteria: A++ for 96โ100%, A+ for 91โ95%, A for 86โ90%, B++ for 81โ85%, B+ for 76โ80%, and B for 71โ75%. C+ will be awarded for 61โ70%, C for 51โ60%, D for 40โ50% as โemerging,โ and U for below 40% as โunder-graded.โ
The minimum passing mark is 40%, and students scoring below this threshold in any subject will fail.
Rahu said the objective of the new grading structure is to standardize evaluation methods across the province and ultimately nationwide. He noted that the initiative will help students, teachers, and institutions align with international education practices.
The minister also indicated that once the system is fully implemented, a GPA-based evaluation may be introduced in the future to further streamline academic performance assessment.
Experts believe the new grading structure will make student assessments fairer and more transparent, while encouraging a focus on overall learning rather than just numerical scores.
The reform comes as part of ongoing efforts to modernize the education system in Sindh and ensure students meet national and international academic standards.
