NEW DELHI – Bangladesh has announced its decision to boycott the upcoming T20 World Cup 2026 , citing security concerns in India. This move could result in a significant financial setback for the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).
According to Indian media reports, the BCB may lose an estimated 325 crore Taka (around $325 million) if they withdraw from the tournament. The potential loss primarily stems from broadcasting and sponsorship deals, which account for roughly 60% of the board’s annual revenue. These funds are critical for the board’s operations and development programs.
The boycott of the T20 World Cup 2026 may also strain cricketing relations between Bangladesh and India. Both nations are scheduled to play a bilateral series later this year, and the decision to skip the World Cup could jeopardize these planned matches. Officials have not yet confirmed whether the series will proceed as scheduled.
The T20 World Cup 2026 is set to take place in February and March, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. Bangladesh’s absence would leave a notable gap in the tournament, affecting both the competition and viewership in the region. Cricket analysts say the boycott could also impact ticket sales, local fan engagement, and overall tournament revenue.
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s cricket team is expected to play all its T20 World Cup matches in Sri Lanka, avoiding direct interaction with the host nation, India. This arrangement allows Pakistan to participate without facing the same security concerns cited by Bangladesh.
BCB officials have not yet provided detailed explanations regarding the security threats. The board emphasized the priority of player safety and well-being, stating that this decision was made in consultation with team management and security advisors.
Cricket experts suggest that the boycott could have long-term consequences for Bangladesh cricket, including sponsorship withdrawals, reduced international exposure, and potential diplomatic challenges with neighboring cricket boards.
