A joint session of Parliament passed a unanimous resolution on the Gul Plaza Tragedy, with full agreement from both the government and opposition. The resolution expressed condolences for the victims, demanded compensation for affected families, and called for improved fire safety measures nationwide.
The session, chaired by Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, began 35 minutes late amid opposition protests. Lawmakers raised slogans and gathered near the speaker’s dais while several important bills were discussed and approved.
The National Commission for Human Rights (Amendment) Bill 2025 was approved after an amendment proposed by PPP member Shazia Marri was accepted. Amendments suggested by JUI members were rejected, and the bill passed with government support.
The Danish Schools Authority Bill 2025 was also approved, despite objections from the President and protests by opposition members. The bill establishes a Danish Schools Authority in Islamabad to manage educational institutions, focusing on low-income families. The Prime Minister will serve as Chairman, with federal ministers, education experts, and private-sector representatives included.
The Domestic Violence Prevention and Protection Bill 2025 was another key legislation passed during the session. Amendments proposed by opposition members were rejected, and the bill received approval. The law now includes protections for men under domestic violence provisions, ensuring broader legal coverage.
During the session, MQM parliamentary leader Dr Farooq Sattar presented the jointly signed resolution on the Gul Plaza Tragedy. Senator Sherry Rehman emphasized that the tragedy is a national issue, not confined to a single city. The resolution was passed unanimously, demonstrating strong parliamentary consensus.
Other discussions included opposition to Pakistan’s participation in the Gaza Peace Board, with Senator Allama Raja Nasir Abbas raising concerns over representation of Palestinians.
