The search operation at the fire-wrecked Gul Plaza on M.A. Jinnah Road entered its eighth day on Saturday. The massive blaze, which broke out on January 17, has claimed several lives, and many victims remain untraced.
A technical and investigation team, accompanied by the Deputy Commissioner South, inspected the ground floor of the devastated building. Officials said about 90 percent of the search operation has been completed so far. Urban Search and Rescue 1122 teams are actively involved in the ongoing efforts.
So far, 71 bodies have been recovered, with 15 identified. Authorities continue to search for missing persons as the building remains structurally unstable. The Army, Rangers, and civil authorities are assisting the teams in the operation.
Engineers are assessing the damage to Gul Plaza to ensure the safety of the rescue teams. Despite the blaze being extinguished, the structure is fragile, making the search operation challenging. Safety measures are strictly enforced during the ongoing recovery work.
Investigators have recovered three digital video recorders (DVRs) from the rubble. The devices, found near a mosque adjacent to Gul Plaza, were handed over to the Deputy Commissioner South for further examination. Officials believe the DVRs could provide critical evidence about the causes and sequence of events leading to the fire.
Authorities hope the analysis of the footage will shed light on how the fire started and spread. The findings may also help prevent similar incidents in the future.
