Section 144 Imposed in Lahore Ahead of Basant Celebrations From Feb 6 To 8

The local administration has imposed Section 144 to ensure the peaceful celebration of the traditional Basant festival. The move aims to prevent any untoward incidents and maintain law and order during the event.

According to the official notification, kites displaying pictures of holy books, religious places, or personalities have been strictly banned. Authorities said the step is necessary to protect religious harmony and social peace during the festival.

Kites carrying flags of any country or political party are also prohibited. The preparation, sale, purchase, and use of such kites will remain banned for 30 days under Section 144.

Officials clarified that only single or multicolored kites without images or symbols will be allowed. Any kite found with religious or political prints will be treated as a violation of the law.

The administration has declared the manufacturing, storage, sale, or use of illegal kites a punishable offence. Law enforcement agencies have been directed to take immediate action against violators.

Sources said authorities feared that miscreants could misuse religious or political symbols during Basant. The enforcement of Section 144 is intended to stop such attempts before they create unrest.

The Punjab government has given conditional approval for Basant celebrations from February 6 to February 8. The festival will be allowed only under strict safety guidelines.

Deputy Commissioner Lahore issued the Basant 2026 notification under the Punjab Kite-Flying Act 2025. The law was recently passed by the Punjab Assembly to regulate kite flying activities.

Authorities have also planned several safety measures. These include installing safety nets and wire-protection systems on major roads. The goal is to reduce accidents caused by kite strings.

Officials said Basant will be celebrated in a controlled and secure environment. They urged citizens to follow the law and cooperate with authorities to ensure a safe and festive atmosphere for everyone.

The administration reiterated that violations will not be tolerated. Strict monitoring will continue throughout the Basant period.
