Islamabad’s district and sessions court has officially closed two cases related to the 2022 ‘Haqeeqi Azadi March’ against the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
The hearing was held at the Islamabad district courts, presided over by Judicial Magistrate Azhar Nadeem. The PTI founder was represented by his lawyer, Sardar Muhammad Masroof Advocate.
During the proceedings, the defense highlighted that both cases date back to 2022. Several co-accused individuals in these cases had already been acquitted. The lawyer noted that an acquittal application for the PTI founder had been pending for two years.
The defense further explained that the PTI founder had not been required to appear in court during this period. They requested that the court either review the pending acquittal application or formally consign the cases to the record room.
After considering the defense’s arguments, the court accepted the request and ordered that both cases against the PTI founder be closed.
Legal experts say closing these cases is a significant development for the PTI founder, ending prolonged legal uncertainty. They noted that the move also reinforces the importance of timely processing of cases in the judicial system.
The closure of these cases comes amid ongoing political debates in Pakistan, with supporters of PTI welcoming the decision. Many believe this will allow the founder to focus on political activities without legal distractions.
Observers also noted that the handling of these cases sets a precedent for ensuring that older pending cases are addressed efficiently. The closure is expected to reduce the burden on the courts while providing relief to those involved.
