ATC Denies Imran Khan’s Request for Personal Doctors’ Medical Check-Up

ATC Denies Imran Khan’s Request for Personal Doctors’ Medical Check-Up

An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Rawalpindi has dismissed former prime minister Imran Khan’s request to be examined by his personal doctors. The decision was announced by ATC Judge Syed Amjad Ali Shah after reviewing arguments from both the defense and prosecution.

Imran Khan had sought permission for personal physicians, including Dr. Asim, Dr. Khurram, and Dr. Samina, to conduct his medical examination. The defense argued that such access is a constitutional and legal right for former prime ministers and cited previous cases, including Nawaz Sharif, who was allowed treatment by personal doctors.

During the hearing, defense lawyer Faisal Malik stressed that Imran Khan is a former national leader and must receive proper medical care as a fundamental right. He added that jail authorities are required to inform family members regarding any medical treatment under standard jail rules.

The Adiala Jail superintendent informed the court that treatment for Imran Khan was ongoing, but did not provide a formal medical report. The court considered the jail’s assurances of proper medical care while delivering its verdict.

The ATC ruled that, according to jail rules, Imran Khan is already receiving adequate medical attention. Therefore, the court dismissed the request for examination by personal doctors.

This decision comes amid ongoing discussions about the healthcare rights of high-profile prisoners in Pakistan. Legal experts note that while former leaders can request personal physicians, courts may deny such pleas if standard medical care is deemed sufficient.

Authorities confirmed that Imran Khan will continue to receive medical treatment under the supervision of jail doctors. The court emphasized that proper procedures are being followed to ensure his health and safety while in custody.

The verdict is expected to set a precedent for similar requests from other high-profile detainees in the future, balancing constitutional rights with security and procedural regulations.
