Punjab Bans Under 18 Marriages Under New Child Marriage Law

Punjab Bans Under 18 Marriages Under New Child Marriage Law

The Punjab government has introduced a new law to curb Child Marriage across the province. The Punjab Child Marriage Restraint Ordinance 2026 makes it illegal to marry anyone under 18 years of age.

The ordinance was approved by the provincial governor on February 11. It sets 18 as the minimum legal marriage age for both males and females. The law removes earlier gender-based differences in age limits. It has come into effect immediately.

Under the new legislation, Child Marriage has been declared a non-bailable offence. Police stations across Punjab have been directed to register FIRs against violators. Authorities say strict enforcement will ensure compliance with the law.

Those found involved in Child Marriage may face imprisonment and heavy fines. The government has also placed responsibility on marriage registrars. They are not allowed to register underage marriages. If they violate the law, they may face cancellation of their license, fines, or even jail time.

Guardians and family members who arrange or fail to prevent underage marriages can also be punished. The law states that such individuals may receive prison sentences and fines of up to Rs 500,000. These cases will be heard by additional district and sessions judges. All such offences will remain non-bailable.

Officials say the purpose of the law is to protect childrenโ€™s rights and ensure equal legal standards for boys and girls. The removal of gender-based distinctions is seen as a significant legal reform.

However, the ordinance has drawn criticism from some Islamic scholars. They argue that the new rules may conflict with certain religious interpretations. Some have indicated that the matter could be challenged in the Shariat Court.

Despite the criticism, the Punjab government has maintained that the law aims to safeguard minors and promote social welfare. Authorities have instructed law enforcement agencies to take immediate action against violations.
