An Israeli stealth fighter has reportedly shot down an Iranian Yak-130 aircraft over Tehran, marking a historic moment in modern air combat. According to the Israel Defense Forces, the incident occurred on Wednesday, March 4, when an Israeli F-35I “Adir” intercepted the aircraft.
Officials said the stealth jet successfully targeted and destroyed the Iranian aircraft during an aerial engagement. The event is being described as the first confirmed air-to-air kill by the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II against a manned enemy aircraft.
The aircraft shot down in the incident was identified as a Yak-130, a Russian-designed training and light combat jet. Military analysts say the encounter highlights the growing technological gap between advanced stealth fighters and older training platforms.
What is the Yak-130?
The Yak-130 is a subsonic, twin-seat advanced jet trainer developed by Russia’s Yakovlev Design Bureau. The aircraft is officially known as the Yakovlev Yak-130 “Mitten.”
It was designed primarily to train pilots transitioning to modern fighter jets. These include advanced aircraft such as the Sukhoi Su-30 and the Sukhoi Su-35.
Iran reportedly received its first Yak-130 aircraft in 2013. The aircraft is used to prepare pilots for operating advanced combat jets.
Despite being a training platform, the Yak-130 can carry weapons. It has several external hardpoints that allow it to carry up to 3,000 kilograms of munitions.
These weapons may include guided bombs, rockets, and short-range air-to-air missiles such as the R-73 missile. This capability allows the aircraft to perform limited combat missions.
Why the loss matters
Experts say the loss of a Yak-130 could affect Iran’s pilot training capacity. The aircraft plays a key role in preparing pilots for more advanced fighters.
Unlike the F-35, the Yak-130 is not designed for air superiority missions. It is slower and lacks stealth technology.
Iran reportedly operates a small number of these aircraft. Because of this, the destruction of even one Yak-130 can reduce training opportunities for future fighter pilots.
Military analysts also say the incident exposes possible weaknesses in Iran’s air defense coverage. It may also raise questions about the survivability of training aircraft during high-risk operations.

Overall, the incident highlights the growing importance of advanced stealth technology in modern warfare. The F-35’s ability to detect and engage targets before being seen remains one of its strongest advantages.
