The proposed electric tram project along Lahore’s historic canal corridor has faced significant delays despite earlier announcements and a successful initial trial run. Authorities confirmed that the project remains under review due to environmental objections and financial challenges.
The government had planned to introduce the eco-friendly tram system to improve urban mobility across key areas of Lahore. The project aimed to provide a modern public transport solution along the canal route, helping reduce traffic congestion and offering commuters a sustainable travel alternative.
Environmental groups have emerged as a major obstacle to progress, with the Lahore Bachao Committee preparing to approach the courts for a stay order. The group argues that cutting trees along the canal could damage Lahore’s natural environment and threaten the city’s green heritage.
Meanwhile, many citizens have expressed support for the tram initiative, saying Lahore’s growing population and increasing traffic demand improved public transport options. Supporters believe the tram service could significantly ease daily commuting and reduce reliance on private vehicles.
Officials stated that the project also faces financial hurdles, as it involves heavy investment in track construction, station development, and importing electric trams from abroad. Discussions with China and several European countries have taken place, but technical and funding issues continue slowing progress.
Transport department authorities clarified that the project has not been cancelled and remains under evaluation. Proposed solutions include revising routes and launching compensatory tree plantation drives. The 27-kilometer tram line, expected to carry over 300 passengers, may proceed once final approvals are secured.
