Iranian authorities have announced a Public Holiday in Tehran on July 6 to help facilitate travel and participation in upcoming nationwide mourning events.
According to government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani, the decision has been taken to ease public movement during the series of memorial ceremonies scheduled across the country. She confirmed that the Public Holiday will allow citizens to attend religious gatherings without work-related obligations.
Officials said Thursday will also be observed as a national day of mourning. Memorial events are planned from July 4 to July 8 in major cities, including Tehran, Qom, and Mashhad.
Authorities expect large crowds to gather for the ceremonies. The biggest event is scheduled to take place in Mashhad on July 8, where thousands of mourners are expected to attend.
The government stated that the Public Holiday will support smoother coordination of transport and security arrangements during the events. It is also expected to reduce congestion on major routes leading to the ceremony locations.
Additional commemorative gatherings are planned in regional cities outside Iran as well. These include events in Baghdad, Kadhimayn, Karbala, and Najaf, where religious scholars and members of the public will participate.
The announcement has attracted significant attention as preparations continue for the nationwide observances. Authorities have urged citizens to cooperate with security and event management teams during the mourning period.
Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei was assassinated in February this year during a series of Israeli airstrikes on Tehran. The attacks targeted key political and military leadership positions.
His death was officially confirmed by Iranian state media on March 1. It marked the end of his 37-year leadership of the Islamic Republic.
Following his death, Iran entered a period of national mourning. The situation also led to political uncertainty and increased regional tensions across the Middle East.
Due to security concerns and ongoing developments, funeral arrangements were postponed for several months. Authorities later announced a series of memorial ceremonies across multiple cities.
The final resting place was confirmed to be the Imam Reza Shrine in Mashhad, where the concluding ceremony is expected to draw a large number of participants.
Officials believe the Public Holiday will help ensure better participation and smoother organization of these large-scale events. The government continues to coordinate arrangements for transport, security, and crowd management.
The mourning ceremonies remain one of the largest coordinated national observances in recent years, reflecting the significance of the former leader’s legacy and the impact of his long tenure in Iran.
