Iran has announced the funeral and burial schedule for its late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, who ruled the country for nearly 37 years. According to state television, Khamenei will be laid to rest on July 9 in his hometown of Mashhad after a series of funeral ceremonies across several major cities.
The burial was originally planned for March but was postponed due to the conflict that affected the country earlier this year. Officials have now confirmed that the final burial ceremony will take place at the holy shrine of Imam Reza (AS) in Mashhad, one of the most significant religious sites in Iran.
According to the announced schedule, funeral ceremonies will begin in Tehran on July 4 and continue on July 5 at Imam Khomeini Mosalla. A large funeral procession is expected to take place in the capital on July 6.
Following the events in Tehran, another major procession will be held in the holy city of Qom on July 7. The final stage of the funeral program will take place in Mashhad on July 9, coinciding with the eve of the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Sajjad (AS).
Iranian authorities expect millions of people to participate in the ceremonies. Reports indicate that attendance across all events could reach as many as 20 million people. A period of national mourning has also been declared to mark the occasion.
Officials stated that funeral processions will pass through at least three major cities, including Tehran, Qom, and Mashhad. According to Khamenei’s will, each procession is expected to last at least 24 hours, allowing people from different regions to pay their respects.
The office responsible for preserving and publishing the works of the late leader said extensive preparations are underway. Authorities have coordinated with government institutions and public organizations to ensure the smooth management of the large gatherings expected during the ceremonies.
Organizers have invited people from across Iran, as well as supporters and followers from around the world, to participate in the farewell events. They emphasized that public participation will play the central role in the ceremonies and described the expected turnout as one of the largest public gatherings in recent years.
