PM Shehbaz, Army Chief Review Security Ahead of Talks

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Defence Forces and Army Chief Asim Munir held an important meeting on Thursday to review preparations ahead of the high-stakes United Statesโ€“Iran negotiations scheduled to take place in Islamabad.

The meeting, held at the Prime Ministerโ€™s House, focused on regional security, diplomatic developments, and Pakistanโ€™s mediation role aimed at reducing tensions between Washington and Tehran. Both leaders expressed satisfaction over the recent easing of tensions and appreciated Pakistanโ€™s diplomatic engagement in promoting dialogue.

During discussions, the prime minister and the army chief stressed the importance of maintaining peace and respecting the ongoing ceasefire environment. They reaffirmed Pakistanโ€™s commitment to facilitating constructive negotiations and ensuring all necessary support for a successful diplomatic outcome.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also praised the restraint shown by all involved parties and expressed optimism that dialogue would lead to long-term regional stability. He reiterated Pakistanโ€™s readiness to extend full cooperation and hospitality to visiting delegations participating in the talks.

The negotiations are scheduled to begin in Islamabad on April 10. Iranโ€™s delegation will be led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, while the US delegation will include Vice President JD Vance, advisor Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner, according to confirmation from White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.

Authorities in Islamabad and Rawalpindi have announced a two-day public holiday during the negotiations to ensure smooth security arrangements. Delegations will stay at a five-star hotel located within the Red Zone, whose security perimeter has been expanded from Zero Point to Faisal Mosque.

The Red Zone โ€” housing key state institutions including Parliament House, Aiwan-e-Sadr, the Prime Ministerโ€™s House, and the Diplomatic Enclave โ€” will remain under strict military security, supported by police and Rangers personnel throughout the duration of the talks.
