HIV Cases Surge in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as 481 New Infections Reported in Four Months

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Health Department has reported a sharp increase in HIV cases in the province. Officials confirmed that 481 new infections were recorded in the first four months of 2026. The rise has raised serious concern among health experts and policymakers.

According to officials, the growing number of HIV cases reflects a major public health challenge. Medical experts have warned that the situation requires urgent attention. They stressed the need for stronger preventive measures and awareness campaigns.

Dr. Tariq Hayat, Director of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa AIDS Control Program, shared updated figures on the situation. He said the total number of registered HIV cases in the province has reached 10,281. This is a noticeable increase from 9,800 cases reported last year.

Officials provided a breakdown of the affected population. The data shows that 7,178 men are living with the virus. At the same time, 2,381 women have been diagnosed with HIV. Additionally, 235 transgender individuals are also affected.

Health authorities also highlighted the impact on children. Reports show that 487 children under the age of 15 are currently living with the disease. Experts say this is a particularly worrying trend that needs immediate intervention.

Despite the rise in cases, officials noted that treatment facilities are available. Patients can access medical care through designated centers. However, experts believe that treatment alone is not enough to control the spread of HIV.

They emphasized the importance of early diagnosis and regular testing. Awareness campaigns can help educate people about transmission and prevention. Safe practices and timely medical support can reduce new infections.

Experts also stressed the need for community engagement. Public cooperation is essential to control the spread of the virus. Reducing stigma around HIV is also important so that more people seek testing and treatment.

Authorities are expected to strengthen efforts in the coming months. The focus will remain on prevention, awareness, and improved healthcare access. Officials believe coordinated action can help manage the situation effectively.
