Britain’s Charles has paid more than £30 million in taxes since becoming king in 2022, royal officials confirmed on Thursday. This is the first time the amount has been made public.
The disclosure places Britain’s Charles among the top taxpayers in the United Kingdom. The move comes as the royal family faces growing calls for more financial transparency.
Officials also confirmed that Britain’s Charles will not make Buckingham Palace his permanent home after its refurbishment ends next year. Instead, he will continue living at Clarence House in London.
Buckingham Palace has served as the main royal residence for nearly 200 years. It became the monarch’s official home when Queen Victoria took the throne in 1837.
The palace has been under renovation since 2017. The project is focused on replacing old electrical systems, pipes, and heating. The total cost of the work is estimated at $487 million.
Royal officials said the palace will still remain the main headquarters of the monarchy. It will continue to host official ceremonies and state visits.
James Chalmers, the king’s treasurer, said Buckingham Palace will remain a key symbol of the monarchy. He added that the king will keep private rooms there for occasional use.
By law, Britain’s Charles is not required to pay income, capital gains, or inheritance tax. However, like his mother Queen Elizabeth II, he chooses to pay taxes voluntarily.
Officials revealed that Britain’s Charles paid £11.7 million in taxes during 2023-24. Since taking the throne, his total tax payments have crossed £30 million.
The king earns private income from the Duchy of Lancaster estate. The estate generated £25.2 million in 2025-26.
He also receives public funding through the Sovereign Grant. This supports royal staff, palaces, and travel costs. The grant rose from £86 million to £132 million this year.
Officials said the grant will be reduced to £100 million in 2027. This cut was made according to the king’s wishes.
