A major maritime incident has increased tensions in the Gulf after the United States seized the cargo vessel M/V Touska. The ship is linked to Iran and was intercepted in the Gulf of Oman. The situation has added pressure to already fragile regional security.
The M/V Touska was stopped by US forces on April 19 near Iran’s Chabahar port. According to US Central Command, the vessel ignored repeated warnings for nearly six hours. After that, American forces boarded the ship and took control. Officials claimed the vessel violated a US naval blockade on Iranian ports.
The M/V Touska was reportedly connected to Iran Shipping Lines, which is under sanctions. US authorities later confirmed that 22 crew members from the ship were transferred to Pakistan for repatriation. Six other individuals were moved to another country earlier. The vessel itself is now being returned to its original owners.
Iran strongly condemned the seizure of the M/V Touska. Tehran called the operation illegal and described it as “armed piracy.” Iranian officials said the ship was on a normal commercial route from China. They also demanded accountability from the United States for the action.
The incident comes during rising tension in the Strait of Hormuz. Since late February, maritime activity in the region has become unstable. Reports of attacks on ships and restrictions on navigation have increased. Iran has also limited passage in response to US actions. The US has imposed a blockade targeting ships leaving Iranian ports, further escalating the crisis.
In response to the growing instability, US President Donald Trump announced a new mission called “Operation Freedom.” The plan aims to escort ships through the Gulf and rescue stranded crews. It reportedly involves around 15,000 troops, over 100 aircraft, warships, and drones. The operation is intended to restore safe navigation in the region.
The M/V Touska incident has intensified fears of wider conflict. Iranian lawmaker Ebrahim Azizi warned that any further US interference in the Strait of Hormuz would be seen as a serious violation. With both sides increasing military presence, the situation remains highly sensitive and unpredictable.
