PTA Plans to Introduce In-Flight Satellite Telecom Services Across Pakistan

Pakistan is moving closer to introducing internet and mobile connectivity services on airplanes as the PTA has released a draft licensing framework for in-flight satellite telecom operations.

The proposed framework would allow passengers traveling on domestic and international flights to access broadband internet and cellular services while in the air. Officials say the move could improve passenger convenience and modernize Pakistan’s aviation communication sector.

According to the draft policy, multiple companies may be allowed to provide satellite-based telecom services on a non-exclusive basis. The PTA has included several conditions related to security, monitoring, and technical infrastructure in the proposed framework.

Authorities stated that all operators would be required to follow Pakistan’s telecom laws as well as aviation regulations. Companies providing the services must also ensure lawful monitoring and maintain secure data systems within the country.

The draft policy explains that mobile and internet services on flights will only operate above 3,000 meters. This restriction has been proposed to avoid possible interference with ground communication systems and aviation equipment.

Officials believe the initiative could significantly improve travel experiences for passengers. Travelers may soon be able to use messaging apps, browse the internet, and stay connected during flights.

The PTA said the framework is part of broader efforts to improve digital connectivity and adopt modern telecom technologies in Pakistan. In-flight communication services are already available in many countries around the world, especially on international airlines.

Experts say introducing satellite telecom services could also support business travelers who need constant internet access while flying. The move may help Pakistani airlines offer more modern facilities to passengers.

Under the proposed system, operators would have to meet strict technical and operational standards before receiving licenses. The telecom authority has also emphasized the importance of protecting user privacy and ensuring cybersecurity measures.

Industry analysts believe the development could attract investment in Pakistan’s telecom and aviation sectors. Improved connectivity services may also increase competition among airlines operating in the region.

The PTA is expected to review feedback from stakeholders before finalizing the policy. Officials have not yet announced when the services may officially launch.
