Three Years After May 9 The Violent Day That Changed Pakistan’s Political Future Forever

Three years after the events of May 9, 2023, the political and social impact of that day continues to shape Pakistan’s national landscape. The unrest that followed the arrest of former prime minister Imran Khan became one of the most significant crises in the country’s recent history.

The events of May 9 began when Imran Khan was taken into custody by Rangers during a court appearance at the Islamabad High Court. The arrest was linked to the Al-Qadir Trust corruption case. Soon after the detention, protests broke out in several cities across Pakistan.

What initially started as demonstrations quickly turned into violent unrest in multiple urban areas. Protesters attacked several government and military-related sites, leading authorities to later describe the day as a “Black Day.”

According to official reports, the death toll ranged between eight and 14 people. However, PTI claimed the number of fatalities was much higher. Hundreds of civilians and more than 230 police personnel were also reported injured during the clashes.

Following the violence, security forces launched a large-scale crackdown. Thousands of people were detained in different cities, especially in Punjab. Officials said more than 1,000 arrests were made in Lahore alone, while nationwide figures crossed several thousand.

The violence caused major damage to public property and state installations. Protesters targeted important buildings, including the Corps Commander’s House in Lahore, also known as Jinnah House. Attacks were also reported on the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi, Radio Pakistan in Peshawar, and other sensitive sites.

Authorities estimated that around 40 public and military buildings were damaged during the unrest. More than 70 vehicles were also set on fire. Officials placed total financial losses at nearly Rs2.5 billion.

The unrest spread across Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar, Quetta, and Faisalabad. In response, the government suspended internet services in several areas and deployed armed forces to help control the situation.

Although Imran Khan was released two days later after the Supreme Court declared his arrest unlawful, legal cases against him continued. Since then, he has faced multiple court proceedings and detentions in different matters.

The aftermath of May 9 also changed Pakistan’s political environment. PTI leaders faced arrests, legal challenges, and political restrictions. At the same time, the party maintained strong public support in many areas during the 2024 general elections.

Political analysts believe May 9 permanently reshaped relations between political parties, state institutions, and the public. The events also raised wider debates about political protests, state authority, legal accountability, and the future of democratic politics in Pakistan.
