Pakistan Plans Major Tariff Cuts at Gwadar Port to Boost Trade

The Pakistan government has announced major tariff reductions at Gwadar Port in an effort to increase trade activity and attract international shipping business.

The decision was announced by Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry. Officials said the new incentives are aimed at boosting transit and trans-shipment operations at the port.

Under the revised policy, berthing charges for container vessels at Gwadar Port will be reduced by 25 percent. In addition, port charges for international trans-shipment containers will be cut by 40 percent.

The government has also reduced charges for transit container cargo by up to 31 percent. Authorities believe these measures will lower operational costs for shipping companies and encourage more cargo movement through the port.

As part of the new package, a one-month free storage facility for general cargo has also been introduced. Officials say the move is intended to make the port more competitive in the regional market.

Junaid Anwar Chaudhry stated that the government is actively working to transform Gwadar Port into a regional logistics and trade hub. He said the revised tariff structure offers strong incentives compared to other national ports in the country.

According to the minister, the relief package could help increase international transit traffic and improve overall port operations. He added that lower costs may encourage global shipping lines to choose Gwadar for cargo handling and regional trade activities.

The government believes the initiative could also create new economic opportunities in Balochistan. Increased trade activity at the port is expected to support employment growth, especially in the logistics and transportation sectors.

Chairman Gwadar Port Noorul Haq Baloch welcomed the announcement and said the new tariff structure would strengthen business confidence. He added that the measures could help improve trade flow and generate additional jobs in the province.

Experts say the latest incentives reflect Pakistan’s broader strategy to expand regional connectivity and improve maritime trade infrastructure. Gwadar’s location near key international shipping routes is considered important for future economic development.

Officials hope the latest tariff reductions will attract more investors and shipping operators in the coming months. Authorities also expect increased cargo activity to support local businesses and strengthen Pakistan’s trade network.
