India has once again increased Petrol and diesel prices, marking the fourth fuel hike within just 11 days. According to Indian media reports, state-owned oil companies raised retail fuel prices on Monday due to rising global crude oil costs and the weakening value of the Indian rupee.
The latest increase pushed Petrol prices higher by Rs2.61 per litre, while diesel became costlier by Rs2.71 per litre across major Indian cities. Officials said the continuous rise in international oil prices has increased import costs for fuel companies.
With the newest revision, cumulative increases in Petrol and diesel prices have now reached nearly Rs7.5 per litre since fuel price adjustments resumed on May 15. Fuel prices had remained frozen for a long period before oil marketing companies restarted revisions earlier this month.
In Delhi, Petrol prices increased from Rs99.51 to Rs102.12 per litre after the latest adjustment. Diesel prices in the capital also rose from Rs92.49 to Rs95.20 per litre.
Other metro cities also witnessed major increases. In Kolkata, Petrol prices climbed by Rs2.87 per litre, taking the new rate to Rs113.51. Diesel in Kolkata increased by Rs2.80 and reached Rs99.82 per litre.
Mumbai also recorded a significant increase in fuel prices. Petrol rates there rose by Rs2.72 per litre to Rs111.21, while diesel became costlier by Rs2.81 per litre and reached Rs97.83.
In Chennai, Petrol prices increased by Rs2.46 per litre to Rs107.77. Diesel prices in the city also went up by Rs2.57 and reached Rs99.55 per litre.
Industry officials linked the repeated hikes to two major factors. The first is the increase in global crude oil prices. The second is the depreciation of the Indian rupee against the US dollar, which has raised the cost of importing fuel.
This is now the fourth revision in fuel prices since May 15. On that date, oil companies first raised Petrol and diesel prices by Rs3 per litre each after ending the prolonged freeze on rates.
A few days later, another increase of around 90 paisa per litre was announced on May 19. Fuel prices were again revised upward on May 23, when companies raised rates by nearly 87 to 91 paisa per litre.
Before Monday’s latest increase, Petrol prices in Delhi had already reached Rs99.51 per litre, while diesel stood at Rs92.49.

The repeated hikes in Petrol and diesel prices are expected to increase transportation and daily living costs across India. Many consumers are now expressing concerns over the continued rise in fuel expenses within a short period.
