The Punjab government has decided to reinforce the Smart Lockdown across the province from Tuesday after the expiry of temporary relief measures granted ahead of Eidul Azha.
The decision is part of the provincial government’s ongoing austerity and energy conservation strategy. Authorities have withdrawn the special exemptions that were provided to traders and businesses during the Eid shopping season.
Under the renewed Smart Lockdown measures, markets, shopping centers, and shops across Punjab will once again be required to close at 8:00 PM. Businesses that had been allowed to operate beyond the usual closing time during the Eid period will now have to follow the original schedule.
Restaurants, hotels, and food outlets will also return to the earlier restrictions. According to the previous government directives, these establishments must close at 10:00 PM. However, takeaway and home delivery services will continue to operate after closing hours.
The temporary relaxation was introduced on May 16 to facilitate shopping activities before Eidul Azha. During that period, shops, markets, shopping malls, restaurants, hotels, and food outlets were exempted from the standard closure timings.
The exemption remained in effect until June 1, 2026. With the deadline now expired, authorities have restored the original Smart Lockdown rules that were first announced in April.
Officials say the restrictions are aimed at reducing electricity consumption and supporting broader energy-saving efforts. The government has been implementing various measures to manage power demand and promote efficient energy use across the province.
The closure timings are also part of wider austerity initiatives designed to reduce operational costs and conserve national resources. Provincial authorities believe that limiting business hours can contribute to lower electricity usage during peak evening periods.
Business owners and traders have been advised to comply with the revised timings to avoid penalties or enforcement action. Market associations have also been informed about the restoration of the restrictions.
The government has emphasized that the measures are not linked to public health concerns but are focused on energy conservation and financial discipline. Officials will continue monitoring implementation across Punjab to ensure compliance.

As the Eid-related relaxation period comes to an end, businesses and consumers will need to adjust to the reinstated Smart Lockdown schedule. The revised timings are expected to remain in place as part of the province’s ongoing efforts to manage energy consumption and maintain austerity measures.
