Legendary Indian playback singer Suman Kalyanpur has passed away at the age of 89, bringing an end to a remarkable musical journey that spanned more than six decades. The veteran singer died at her residence in Mumbai on May 31 after suffering from age-related health issues.
According to author and close associate Mangala Khadilkar, Suman Kalyanpur breathed her last around 8:00 PM. Khadilkar said the singer had been unwell for more than a month and spent her final days listening to the songs that made her one of the most respected voices in Indian music.
The singer’s last rites were scheduled to take place in Mumbai. She is survived by her daughter, Charu.
The passing of Suman Kalyanpur marks the end of an era in Indian playback music. Known for her soft, melodious voice and classical training, she earned admiration from music lovers across generations. Her singing style was praised for its simplicity, emotional depth, and graceful delivery.

Born in Dhaka, now part of Bangladesh, Kalyanpur later moved to Mumbai with her family.
