Punjab Approves Free E-Bike and E-Taxi Scheme for Students and Youth

Punjab Approves Free E-Bike and E-Taxi Scheme for Students and Youth

The Punjab government has approved a major transport initiative that will provide thousands of electric vehicles to students and unemployed youth. The new Free E-Bike and e-taxi scheme is expected to be included in the upcoming provincial budget.

Under the proposal, 50,000 electric bikes and 5,000 electric taxis will be offered through interest-free financing. The program aims to improve transportation access while creating new economic opportunities across the province.

Officials said the Free E-Bike scheme is designed to help students and young job seekers who face transportation challenges. Easy installment plans and interest-free payment options will make electric vehicles more affordable for eligible beneficiaries.

The proposal has already been cleared for inclusion in the next fiscal year’s budget. Authorities believe the initiative will support youth empowerment and encourage greater participation in economic activities.

Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan said the government is also considering additional incentives for participants. These incentives may include assistance with vehicle registration costs and other related expenses.

According to the minister, the Free E-Bike and e-taxi programs will help thousands of young people improve mobility and access employment opportunities. He added that the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to supporting youth development and sustainable transportation.

The scheme is also expected to contribute to environmental goals. Electric vehicles produce fewer emissions compared to conventional vehicles. Officials believe increased adoption of electric mobility can help reduce pollution levels across Punjab.

The proposal comes as the provincial government reviews transportation policies ahead of the new budget announcement. Alongside the electric vehicle initiative, authorities are evaluating the future of the provinceโ€™s free public transport program.

A briefing presented to the chief minister suggested that the continuation of free public transport services may depend on fuel prices. Under one proposal, the service could be discontinued if petrol prices fall to Rs. 300 per litre.

Officials are also examining another proposal that would end the free travel program altogether. Final decisions regarding both proposals are expected in the coming weeks as budget preparations continue.

Meanwhile, government figures show that more than 70 million passengers have benefited from the free public transport facility during the last two months. The figures highlight the widespread use of public transportation services across Punjab.

If approved in the final budget, the Free E-Bike and e-taxi scheme could become one of the provinceโ€™s largest youth-focused transportation programs. Officials believe the initiative will support employment, improve mobility, and promote cleaner transportation solutions throughout Punjab.
