Karachi Mayor Sparks Debate After Riding e-Bike Without License and Helmet in City Ride

Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab Siddiqui drew public attention after riding an e-bike without a driving license and helmet. The incident took place during his travel from the KMC head office to the Sindh Assembly.

According to details, the mayor used an e-bike to attend an official meeting in Karachi. During the ride, he openly admitted that he violated traffic rules. He stated that he did not have a motorcycle license and also forgot to wear a helmet.

He clarified that while he holds a car driving license, he has not yet obtained a motorcycle license. The mayor said he plans to apply for one soon. He also promised to start using a helmet in future rides on an e-bike.

Murtaza Wahab mentioned that riding an e-bike is simple and similar to cycling. He added that he previously used to ride bicycles, which made the experience easy for him.

When questioned by journalists about political pressure or fear of opposition leaders, he denied any such concerns. He said he only fears accountability before Allah and no political figure.

The mayor also highlighted that the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation has already distributed 20 e-bikes to employees. He added that more e-bike units will be provided in the future to support eco-friendly transport.

Despite the clear traffic violation, no action was taken by the traffic police during the ride. Officials have also not issued any e-challan related to the incident so far.

The situation has sparked discussion about traffic discipline and enforcement rules in the city. Many observers say public officials should strictly follow the law while using vehicles, including an e-bike.

In a separate development, the mayor also chaired a meeting on city development projects. He directed authorities to establish beautification zones along major roads in Karachi.

He emphasized that infrastructure projects should not only focus on construction but also on improving the cityโ€™s visual appearance.

The use of e-bike technology is being promoted as part of cleaner transport initiatives in Karachi. However, officials say proper licensing and safety rules must still be followed by all users, including public representatives.
