Electricity Charges Set to Drop as NEPRA Approves Rs56 Billion Relief for Consumers

Electricity Charges Set to Drop as NEPRA Approves Rs56 Billion Relief for Consumers

Electricity consumers across Pakistan will see a major relief in upcoming bills. Authorities have approved a reduction in Electricity Charges under the latest tariff adjustment.

ISLAMABAD: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has approved a reduction of Rs1.99 per unit under the quarterly tariff adjustment mechanism. The relief will apply for June, July, and August bills.

According to officials, the decision will reduce Electricity Charges and provide a total benefit of around Rs56 billion to consumers. The adjustment is part of the January to March 2026 review cycle.

NEPRA confirmed that the reduction will remain effective for three months. The overall estimated relief is expected to reach nearly Rs67 billion when fully implemented.

At the same time, NEPRA also approved a fuel cost adjustment increase of Rs1.19 per unit for electricity consumed in April 2026. This increase will be included in June bills and will generate around Rs11 billion for power companies.

Due to both adjustments, consumers will experience a net reduction of about 80 paisa per unit in June bills. However, the larger reduction in Electricity Charges will continue for the following two months.

Officials said the fuel cost adjustment was lower than the initial request submitted by the Central Power Purchasing Agency. The original demand was Rs1.74 per unit, but NEPRA reduced the final amount.

The regulator explained that the quarterly reduction is based on several factors. These include changes in capacity payments, transmission costs, system losses, and adjustments under government electricity consumption programs.

NEPRA further clarified that the relief will apply to most consumer categories. However, lifeline users and some prepaid categories will remain partially exempt from these adjustments in Electricity Charges.

Experts say the reduction may provide temporary financial relief to households already facing high utility costs. However, they also note that future fuel price changes may still affect billing trends.
